An expansive space that will straddle LA’s famed Wilshire Boulevard, the project will feature 110,000 square feet of gallery space in one single level to display and present art in a non-hierarchical, egalitarian way. As part of the new building, Clark will construct a new theater, education spaces, three restaurants, a museum shop, multi-purpose event spaces, and ancillary and back-of-house facilities.
The California Building for the Permanent Collection is slated to open to the public in 2024.

KCGM CIL 2 Crane Project
We copped an RFQ to check the design integrity of a structure sitting right above the CIL tanks, where the client plonked a crane on top. The spot’s a bit of a minefield—no welding allowed because of the dangerous fumes wafting off the Cyndie tanks, so any design tweaks had to be on point.
The Solution
MINING MART’s ace in the hole was our LASER SCAN tech, which turned out to be the only way forward. We scanned the whole area and knocked up a 3D model that nailed the current site conditions.
Our Design Engineering team, led by our Principal Engineer, then got cracking. They threw around a few ideas, did a heap of study, and ran a stack of FEA analyses to land on the best temporary concept for the structure’s design.
The Challenge
The biggest curveball? We had no loading details or proper drawings of the structure, or the gear perched on it. With that in mind, we had to get creative and dig deep into our engineering toolkit.
The Outcome
Given the dicey location and the no-welding rule above the CIL tanks, we had to scrap our earlier design. But no worries, we cooked up a new concept that’s not just a quick fix but a permanent solution. This new design passed all the FEA tests and ticked all the boxes for the client’s requirements.
All in all, it was a ripper of a project that showed off our engineering smarts and ability to adapt on the fly.
